The last time I moved I took an enormous bag full of unused gifts from various past employers to Vinnies.  Along with the 20 odd t-shirts and 11 caps were 2 (shoddily made) picnic hamper sets, 5 umbrella’s, (I kept another 4 – although why I really have no idea as I haven’t used any of them in 6 years), about 9 stress balls (what message does THAT send?!!), 4 plastic insulated coffee cups, a vinyl/faux leather notebook cover and desk set, 5 completely useless branded backpacks and about 15 plastic water bottles.  [What didn’t make it were the various bottles of wine which I had consumed having long since forgotten who they were from and the olive tapenade and stale crackers never eaten!]

I know I had cupboards full of what was essentially landfill but I felt too guilty to send it there given the consumption of precious resources taken to make it.  Sadly when I got to Vinnies they told me that they would throw the vast majority of it away as they were inundated with it.

So, why then write a post about more “stuff”.  Well because we’re heading into giving season and if you’re going to give stuff then it would be remiss of me not to tell you about gifts that are useful, beautiful and sustainable.  A gift that keeps on giving – to our farmers & beekeepers, to the jobs it creates at our hive, to our local packaging manufacturers and suppliers.  A gift that recognises that your staff work hard and they also need to relax hard.

A few months ago we were tasked by long term client, Buzz Strategic Concepts, to put together a little ‘just because’ gift for their clients.  Not for Christmas.  Not for any particular reason.  Just a random act of kindness and gratitude gift.  They sent us personalised cards to go with each gift and we did all the logistics for them.  Bravo!

And to make sure the gift went the extra mile, we put their brand on the candle – subtle but effective.  Every time their client looks at or fires up this little beauty (and if you know your Queen B candles you’ll know that that will be a whole lot of times over a whole long period of time!) lovely, sweet, positive, appreciative thoughts flying your way!

Of course we also do larger gifts and hampers

And we do smaller gifts too… this one coming in under $15.

Seems we’re at the pointy end of the year from a gift giving point of view… and so a little, gentle, oh-so-sweet reminder that we’d love to solve all your gift giving woes for you!  We cater for both the complete control freaks who arrive with lists (with whom I have immediate affinity :-0) and for our many male customers who send us a list of the people they want gifts for (+ essential details) and a budget and we pick, pack & wrap.  Whether you’re looking for a gift for a special teacher, a little something meaningful in the stocking, a kris kringle gift or a sustainable, Australian made gift for all of your staff and clients we’ve got it covered.

As I write this, I’m ponder the words and philosophy of another blog I read, Whole Larder Love.  Rohan speaks a lot about the impact on the planet of consumerism and, on many levels I agree.  I reconcile what I do (selling beeswax candles and other, beautiful, Australian made products) because I know that what we do does actually make a difference to many lives and many businesses.

When you buy a Queen B candle you are supporting Australian beekeepers and the regional communities they live in as well as our staff and our many Australian suppliers.  Don’t let that just wash over you as being marketing spin (it isn’t).  Think about it for a moment.  Our beekeepers (and their hard working bees) put food on our plates, flowers in our gardens, herbs and veggies in our patches and the caramelised sunlight that we call honey in just about anything tasty.  They’re worth fighting for. They’re worth supporting and hopefully we bring you a product that makes it easy and affordable for you to show that support.  The fact that you also get to bathe in the natural wonder that is bee-created light is a bonus.  And, oh, what a bonus.  Even after a decade of making beeswax candles, the flame of a Bee Light candle can still stop me, as it grabs me by the eye-balls and demands that I get into the moment NOW.  Right now.

Conjoined Bee Lights… a happy production error. An even more visible halo…

If you’ve never noticed the aura/halo that that surrounds the flame of a pure beeswax candle (versus the paraffin tealight candle on the right), take a look the next time you light a beeswax candle.  It truly is extraordinary.

I’ll leave it at that.  The literature says that the answer to getting people to read your blog (or newsletters) is to do short posts!  I find that next to impossible because there is so much thought behind everything that we do… and I just like a good chat.

As an aside, because it’s lovely to share a little of the magic that goes on at Queen B… you may know if you’ve followed us for a while that our continued survival is due, in some part, to ‘angels’ who turn up weekly as volunteers to package the candles.  It wasn’t something that I dreamed up, but someone, somewhere realised I needed help and it arrived.  Many of the angels who have helped have had terminal cancer and so their numbers have dwindled over the years.  At the same time Queen B has been growing.  We’re now very reliant on the couple of remaining angels (and mum and dad are being called in with alarming regularity to get me through a fix)!  About a week ago I said to Sarah (the same Sarah who writes the beautiful notes on your invoices) we desperately need more angels but I have no idea how you go about finding angels!

Fast forward a week.  A woman (we’ll call her Robin) calls yesterday morning.  She’s local.  Googled for beeswax candles.  Popped in to the hive.  We had a lovely chat and off she went with bags full of beeswax candles (and some of the DIVINE Dinosaur Designs stuff we’ve got in store).  A few hours later she was back.  This time I was upstairs and she was looked after by Sarah.  Now it may have had something to do with the fact that I was supposed to be doing MYOB, but I could hear their conversation and I hear  Robin say ‘if you’re ever looking for a volunteer… a spare set of hands… someone to help out, I’d love to come and just spend time here and help you’.  I seriously almost vaulted off the mezzanine level.  Certainly not many of the stairs were touched as I flew down them.  I could have (and I think I may have) hugged her!  All the while saying a silent word of thanks to the powers that bee.  Amazing… and nothing really to do with kris kringle or stocking stuffers or teachers gifts – but my favourite part of this post!

If you did make it to the end – thank you!

Well it appears as if there are more jam jar obsessed people than we realised… or is it beeswax candle in glass obsessed people?… or is it quirky, sustainable gift people?… or is it fans of Joost?… Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth, we’re just happy being slammed and knowing that regardless of your own particular bent, these Jam Jar Tealight beauties will never disappoint.

While a mother isn’t supposed to have favourites, I have told my big sister’s for years that I was mum’s favourite (that’s the baby’s prerogative  right?!) and as the baby of the Queen B range, I have to admit that the Jam Jar Tealights are my new favourite.  That probably leaves the Bee Lights with middle child syndrome, which based on my experience means they will move to London where they can truly feel loved!

Anyway, of course no sooner than we had them launched (and mum and dad had been called on to pack emergency supplies because we couldn’t keep up!) than the calls started about refills and bulk supplies for parties and events.  Being the nimble, agile, sleek, athletic, customer-focused, (very, very good looking) bees that we are at Queen B, we’ve put them together too.

So, with no further ado, we’re proud to announce the launch of our Jam Jar Tealight Refills pack (there are 15 candles in the beautiful, Australian made box with the 100% recycled, chlorine free kraft label!).

And, for those of you who think that 2 jars isn’t nearly enough and you want LOTS, or you’re having a big party, or you want to give a few as gifts, or you love jam jars a lot, or you’re running a restaurant called the Greenhouse by Joost and you want to light up the entire dining area with pure Australian beeswax tealight candles in jam jars, we’ve also put together a Party Pack of 60 Jam Jar Tealights (all in jars).

And just in case you didn’t realise how gorgeous our new babies are, here’s another take on them…

It's a play date! Joost's baby girl with Queen B's baby.

Yep, we think Joost & Jen make good babies too!

Kat (who packs your orders) banned me from offering a discount, so we negotiated (got to love a democracy) and we’re doing 20% off for 24 hours only (offer finishes 11.59pm, 5th December 2012).  As a few people have realised recently, no the discount end date/time is not negotiable.  It is a gift to our early adopters which are consistently the people who know and love and spread the word and it’s our way of saying thanks.  We genuinely appreciate it.

That means that those of you that only read our newsletters will miss it. 😦  Those of you who like us on Facebook and subscribe to our blog are in on the secret!

I had two blog posts that I wanted to work on today and initially thought they were separate subjects.  One on “Buy Nothing New Month” and one on Conscious Giving – but then I realised that they’re really one and the same.

I must admit that my initial (knee-jerk) reaction to Buy Nothing New Month was one of horror.  Taken literally, that would be a complete disaster not just for Queen B, but for thousands of Australian manufacturers and small businesses.  Then I started thinking about how it really doesn’t apply to our candles!  Being beeswax, they are essentially recycled.  They’re not ‘new’.  We take a waste product from honey production and turn it into something functional.  Beeswax candles are as ‘vintage’ as it gets.  My lawyer brain was working overtime!

Then I read on…

It’s about thinking where our stuff comes from (finite resources) and where it goes when we’re done (often landfill) and what are the fantastic alternatives out there to extend the life of our ‘stuff’.”

And you know what, I really get that.  I think about that stuff on a daily basis.  It’s one of the reasons that we only use 100% pure Australian beeswax – infinite (if we look after our bees), long lasting, naturally carbon neutral, non-toxic, no landfill content (soy, palm and paraffin all have a very high environmental cost).  It’s why we don’t make square candles (too much wasted beeswax).  It’s why we use sinamay bags (a waste product from banana harvesting that is completely biodegradable).  It’s why we use Australian sourced, FSC certified card for our packaging (smaller environmental footprint than recycled card as it turns out).

And that then gets me on to my second post which was all about conscious giving.  Choosing carefully.  While it may seem too early to be talking about the festive season, when you’re pouring candles individually from an enamel teapot, you get started on Christmas early!… and I happen to know that we have lots of ‘A type’ personalities in our customer base (takes one to know one) who are planning end of year teachers gifts!  Anyway, I acknowledge my own bias, but if you are considering gifts (be they birthday, corporate, festive, teachers, lovers or just because), then I know that giving a Queen B candle is a gift that gives many times over.

As for ‘buy nothing new month’, I suggest that we change it to ‘buy consciously every day of the year’.  That Queen B lady… She’s a crazy one!

As you probably know by now, supporting Australian beekeepers and regional communities is a big driver at Queen B.  So, we’re all for anything that promotes Australian farmers and gets people thinking about the role that our farmers play and what we can do to support them.  It’s a happy coincidence then that in 2012 we are celebrating Australian Year of the Farmer.  Hopefully we’ll go on celebrating our farmers every year.

AYOF is about celebrating and enriching the connections between rural and urban Australia.  It recognises what farmers do for all Australians. It’s about what we eat; about fresh fruit and vegetables (generally pollinated by honey bees), dairy, grains (pollinated by bees), fish, meat (fed on grain pollinated by bees), eggs and about wool, cotton, timber – all the fine quality products that our farmers grow and harvest in large and small businesses. [And about the integral role in each of these activities, played by honey bees – Ed.]

Australian farms and the industries that support them generate more than $405 billion each year, that’s 27% of our GDP.Australia’s farmers should be recognised and celebrated: for feeding the nation, for leading the world in farming techniques and innovation, and for sustaining the vital agribusinesses that underpin our economy. Farmers are the providers of our nation.

So, to me, the big question is what we can do in our every day lives to support Australian farmers and beekeepers.  Here are a few thoughts:

  • only buy Australian fruit and veg – and if the supermarkets don’t have what you want from an Australian grower, complain.  Be belligerent about it.  Just last week I bought crushed garlic in a jar because it was the only way of getting Australian garlic (at 10pm for team lunch at the hive the next day)
  • Don’t buy that wretched $1 milk – it’s killing our dairy farmers.  Complain about that too.
  • Support small producers where you can by buying at farmers markets, your local fruit & veggie store or organic stores

and buy roadside honey directly from a beekeeper… the supermarket stuff is generally a blend of local and imported honey (that is overheated to stop it candying on the shelves).

And here’s a biggie

we’re nearing that time of year when businesses will spend literally hundreds of millions of dollars on staff gifts (we hope) and client gifts.  Send them our way and we guarantee a gift that will not only be loved by the recipient, but will directly support Australian regional communities.  We have gifts ranging from $20 to hampers choc full of honey, beeswax candles and other honey goodness (nougat, beeswax based mens shave soap etc) that range from $75 to $250.  We can brand things.  We can handle logistics.  The sky is the limit.

So, if you work in a business that gives gifts, or you have any friends in high places who organise gifts, please pass on our details.  We’d be only too happy to wow them with what the world can look like without another jar of olive tapenade, bottle of wine or overseas made picnic set!  And just before you worry that our gifts are really aimed at women, over 80% of corporate hamper recipients are men and in the words of the Head of Marketing Strategy from one of our clients “I just wanted to tell you how beautiful I thought the hampers came out.  I hope you are as proud of them as we were to present them to the company.  I had many people say how amazing they looked and we received feedback from clients like never before.”

Bring it on.  We’re ready and rearing to go!

Cheers

Cate

Queen B Christmas Corporate Gift Hamper

OK, so not exactly a catchy title!  Believe me, I’ve tried 10 prior to this one that were worse.

While it may seem a little commercially crass to be talking about Christmas now, most companies are making a decision on what they are doing for client gifts, staff gifts or corporate hampers now… and we would like to be in the mix.

What do your corporate gifts say about your company and it’s values?  Do they value health/life balance?  The environment?  Regional communities? Australian made?  Perhaps most importantly, is it memorable?  Does it cut through?  Does it have longevity?

I LOVED doing our hampers last year, because I was just so thrilled on behalf of our clients that they were offering something different to another jar of olive tapenade!  Another bottle of wine!

Our most popular hamper on behalf of our clients last year was sent to men (CTO’s, CEO’s, COO’s) and included a rolled pillar (in the Phoenix design), a black votive, a jar of Australian honey, a pair of the small Christmas trees, a box of chocolate coated honeycomb, a Tasmanian wood-turned honey dipper, a chunk of pure Australian honeycomb (straight out of the hive), a block of all natural men’s shave soap, a Tasmanian beer shampoo bar and a Queen B eco-bulb… oh, and a bottle of wine provided by our client!

We also had a similar version that went to their female clients substituting the Casablanca design for Phoenix, a frosted votive and a bottle of divine Honey Cream bath.

We also did a smaller hamper that packed a punch too with Christmas trees, an eco-bulb, a jar of Australian honey, a bar of Goats Milk soap and a beautiful honey dipper.

The warehouse and office staff at our courier company voted Queen B hampers the best they’d saw last Christmas (and being a courier company, they see them all!) and our clients (without exception) have returned to us this year.

Anyway, so this is a bit of an APB.  We would LOVE to be working with more companies this year to do gifts that are memorable and that build their brand and that are meaningful and lasting and full of ‘sweetness and light’.

If your company does gifts, I would be extremely grateful if you could either pass our details on to them, or pass their details on to me and we’ll get on to it.  Feel free to pass this on to friends and family too!

You just never know, if you’re lucky, a Queen B hamper or Queen B candle may be winging its way to you this Christmas… now wouldn’t that make your day? or festive season?!

Queen B beeswax candles are made with 100% pure Australian beeswax a pure cotton wick and copious amounts of hand made love. We stock beautiful and stylish candle holders, personalised candles, votive candles and pillar candles that nourish the human spirit and our environment.
