It was with some horror that I read a newspaper article in October which said that in 2009 Australians spent nearly $1 billion on “unwanted Christmas gifts”… [it went on to say that “scented candles, novelty neck ties and foot spas (were) the most spurned items”].  To read the article click on the image at the bottom of this post.

So, I spoke to our clever web guy and he’s developed a Queen B Wishlist function on our website.  O.K. so we’re not creating world peace with this one, but it’s got to be a step in the right direction if we had more people burning Queen B candles!  Imagine how easy it would make things if the people you loved just told you exactly what they wanted for Christmas… or their birthday… or Valentines Day… or just because?

The Wishlist function is extremely simple to use, but only works when you are logged in to your account.

To create your wishlist, visit the Queen B website and log in to your account (in the right hand menu bar).  Now when you browse through the site, you’ll notice that each product has the option to “Add to Cart” or “Add to Wishlist”.  Once you’ve created your wishlist, you then have the option of emailing it to all and sundry via the beautifully simple email tool we’ve got, or there is a link you can copy and paste into an email of your own creation.

Goodness gracious, Happy Days!  You get your wishes come true and gifts that are exactly what you want and truly useful, and your family and friends get to play genie in a bottle.

This is version 1.  If you hit any bugs in the system or have suggestions for improvement, please pop me an email.  If you just want to tell Adam (clever web guy) that he is a genius, feel free to do that too.  I declared undying (platonic) love a little earlier this evening!

And now for the article that set our Wishlist functionality in train…

I have spent a lot of time over-analysing Queen B!  The breadth of what I think about is extensive, so I’ll spare you most of it.  The part I do want to share in this post is my thinking about how we’ve survived this long, how I would like Queen B to grow and thrive, and one of the things I’m doing about it!

Making and selling what would be considered a luxury good during a global financial crisis is tough… particularly when you’re operating on narrow margins.  I am convinced that one of the reasons we have survived is because our customers are extraordinarily loyal (and probably consider lighting a candle an affordable luxury).  I highlight “extraordinarily” because I genuinely believe that what we have is special and unique.

With 15 years in the corporate sector prior to launching into Queen B full-time, I’ve seen companies that make decisions based only on what is best for the company and then wonder why their customers aren’t loyal.  What I have learned with Queen B is that loyalty can’t actually be bought, it must be earned.  And perhaps more importantly, it is a two way street.  That got me thinking.

We have a disproportionate number of customers who buy Queen B candles either because they received one as a gift, or because they have experienced them at the home of a friend.  We particularly want to reward our customers who are passionate about Queen B candles.  Who help us spread the word in the absence of an advertising budget!  Who think of us for gifts for friends.  Who consider a little natural beeswax candle light as being an important part of their lives…

Which is a really long winded way of getting to my point…

Coinciding with the launch of our new website (in fact it was one of the major reasons for overhauling our site) is the launch of our new Queen B Frequent Foragers Program.  Every dollar that you spend with Queen B online (excluding postage) goes towards increasing your loyalty reward.  Adam, clever web guy, has even managed to migrate all of your previous orders into the new system, so your reward level is based on all of your online orders to date.  The rewards are as follows:

  • once you’ve spent $1000 online with Queen B, we’ll give you 3% off your future online orders
  • once you’ve spent $2000 online with Queen B, we’ll give you 4% off your future online orders
  • once you’ve spent $3000 online with Queen B, we’ll give you 5% off your future online orders
  • once you’ve spent $4000 online with Queen B, we’ll give you 6% off your future online orders
  • once you’ve spent $5000 online with Queen B, we’ll give you 7% off your future online orders

Your Frequent Foragers reward applies IN ADDITION to any other special offer that we may have on at the time.  Most importantly the rewards are real.  They apply to every item on our website.  And whilst it may seem like a lot to spend (and it is a lot to spend), I am sure that if you think through how much you spend on gifts during the year (think: thank you gifts, birthday gifts, feel better gifts, I’m sorry gifts, I think I’m meant to be sorry gifts, I like you a lot gifts, I love you gifts, I appreciate you gifts, cheer up gifts, christmas gifts, congratulations gifts, gifts for new mums etc) you’ll probably find that we have something perfect and that you’ll be earning rewards in no time at all.

Now for the fine print:

1. There may be times when we offer some extra-special deal so generous that we need to withhold the loyalty reward just for that time. We reserve the right to do that, but will never do so unreasonably.

2. We reserve the right to change the program (I am not anticipating doing this, but I know enough about the surprises of business to know that unforeseen things happen and that we need flexibility to change with the times).  Our two core drivers will remain that a) the business is viable, and b) our customers are not just happy, but absolutely delighted.

Postscript

The universe has a funny way of playing games… just as I am writing about how big companies just don’t understand the REAL meaning of loyalty I’ve just seen an NRMA ad about their ‘loyalty’ program.  As an NRMA customer, I wasn’t feeling it!

Oh my goodness, the last 24 hours has been an absolute riot!  Bring it on.  More of that please universe?!

It seems that there was some pent up demand for Queen B candles and everyone just needed a little nudge, a little reminder, that life is too short not to be bathed in beeswax candlelight.

It seems that our new website largely survived unscathed (good one Adam!) and I am fabulously, deliriously happily scathed!  I have done the stairs in our building no fewer than 40 times today (to all the analysts out there, yes I was a little inefficient in my processes).   I used an entire 50 meter roll of our beautiful, water-activated arabic gum paper tape (sticky tape is really toxic).  A 200L bag of our eco corn flour stuffing… and stuck the last label on its parcel about 2 minutes before Australia Post arrived!

So chuffed to be warming up your winter with pure Queen B candlelight.

Thanks for jumping on board… I just got a taste for what I would like Queen B to be like every day!

To top it all off, I received a beautiful card from a customer today… here’s the front of it…

Our new website went live just 14 short days ago.

Like most new mothers (or people who run a small business and really need to get a life), I am besotted and can’t stop looking at it.  Oh, the dreams that I have for its future…

Adam (clever web guy and realisor of dreams) assures me that it can’t be crashed.  I thought I’d give him a run for his money.

So, for the next 22 hours (this post is 2 hours late) we’re offering 10% off the entire Queen B range.  To get the discount, either use this link, or use the code Love Queen B in the discount coupon field when you’re checking out your shopping cart.

If you’ve been with us for a while, you know we seldom discount.  We’ve never discounted like this… it is the website baby brain!  Certainly both Adam and I are sleep deprived!!  So if you have winter nights to make cosy, presents to buy, love to send, or simply need a cupboard full of random acts of kindness in waiting, then the next 22 hours is the time.

Get in quick

The new Queen B website went live about 2 weeks ago… I thought I’d delay the announcement until we’d had a little time to iron out any bugs that cropped up.

What happened instead is that after several weeks of sleep deprivation our wonderful web guy came down with the migraine to end all migraines.  So it’s 2 weeks later and there are still a few things that we would like to make work better, but the new site is live and we are already receiving really lovely feedback.

In fact, one of the things that I am happiest about (and one of the major reasons I wanted to update the website) was so that we could share some of the beautiful feedback that we get… and it’s now there on every page.  There is something really lovely about making something that literally lights up lives… hearing about it, or being dropped a note of appreciation is icing on the cake.

Click on the picture to go straight to the site and marvel! (or is it only me after a year of dreaming, planning and doing  that is this excited?!)

For the past several weeks I’ve been working flat out on a new website. It is designed to make it easier to browse our range, to make it more interactive and dynamic, and most importantly to allow some of the amazing feedback that we get to be shared.

Because the new website is being built on an entirely new platform, I have had to load every product we sell again (I was a little blown away to discover there are over 260 products for sale on our website) and because of the new search mechanism I’ve had to weigh, measure, photograph and do new product descriptions for every single one.  Both Adam (wonderful techy guy) and I are very sleep deprived!

Anyway, the goal is to have the new system go live in the next couple of weeks.  To do this, we’ll be needing some testers who can go through the website and look for typo’s, find any pages that aren’t working and place dummy orders to test the ordering process.  Ideally I would like about 10 people.  You will be rewarded with our heartfelt thanks (& one of our beautiful beeswax candles of our choice)!

If you are interested, please send am email to queenb[at]queenb.com.au within the next 72 hours.  [NB email address is written that way to prevent robots picking it up and sending me more spam than we already get]
