Archive for April, 2010

For the past several weeks I’ve been working flat out on a new website. It is designed to make it easier to browse our range, to make it more interactive and dynamic, and most importantly to allow some of the amazing feedback that we get to be shared.

Because the new website is being built on an entirely new platform, I have had to load every product we sell again (I was a little blown away to discover there are over 260 products for sale on our website) and because of the new search mechanism I’ve had to weigh, measure, photograph and do new product descriptions for every single one.  Both Adam (wonderful techy guy) and I are very sleep deprived!

Anyway, the goal is to have the new system go live in the next couple of weeks.  To do this, we’ll be needing some testers who can go through the website and look for typo’s, find any pages that aren’t working and place dummy orders to test the ordering process.  Ideally I would like about 10 people.  You will be rewarded with our heartfelt thanks (& one of our beautiful beeswax candles of our choice)!

If you are interested, please send am email to queenb[at]queenb.com.au within the next 72 hours.  [NB email address is written that way to prevent robots picking it up and sending me more spam than we already get]

Apart from being passionate about beeswax candles, I am also passionate about educating kids about the wonderous world of bees and honey.  To that end we have a lot of educational information in the shop ranging from big content and picture rich posters I designed to fabulous children’s books about bees.

To be honest, it is seldom used.  I’ve reflected on that a lot wondering whether there was a better way to present the information to make it more compelling.  Whether I needed to do more signage.  What more I could do to encourage that educational aspect of what we do… but ultimately our calls to over 70 schools have gone unheeded, and people rush in and rush out of the store.

Imagine then my delight this morning when a mum and dad came in with their two sons.  They did a honey tasting with the kids, and then while I was engrossed in conversation with the dad about forestry (it’s a fascinating subject), this happened.

When I turned around, I actually got goose bumps.

What a wonderful sight.

One of the most challenging aspects of doing Queen B is finding, training a  beeswax candle-maker.

It is a role for a perfectionist who can see the beauty in detail.  It is a very physical role (which detailed roles usually aren’t) – so the role requires someone strong enough to safely lift a 12kg bucket of molten wax,but who can pour a candle with those extra few drops so that it is abundant and ‘voluptuous’!  It’s a role that pushes people to challenge themselves and their beliefs – just as we like to challenge perceived boundaries at Queen B!

Sometimes we get it fabulously right – as in the case of Adrienne who has happily rolled candles at Queen B for 4 years.

We’re on the lookout to add another member to our Hive focused on pouring beeswax candles.

For the right person, this is a very rare role that is inspiring, active, varied, exacting and fulfilling.  You get to make a difference to people’s lives every day and to be part of a team committed to the same.

To find out more about the role, please have a look at the Job Description.

If you’re interested in the role, please pop me an email (and a resume).
